[Music Review] Best of Aska Yang 杨宗纬

Aska Yang shot to fame in 2007, after participating in the Taiwan singing competition One Million Star (超級星光大道), since then he has released 3 studio albums and held a number of concerts around the world. He was my mom’s favorite singer and I also listened to his music every day in art class when I was back in college. I liked him so much at the time that I even drew a portrait of him with charcoal for my final project, and actually got full points for it (lol). In 2010, I flew to Las Vegas with my mom to see Aska perform live (we had front row tickets)! It was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had and one of the best memories we shared together…

However, after my mom’s passing in 2013, I couldn’t get myself to listen to his music again because it hurt too much. But, his recent release with Zhang Bichen “Bracing the Chill” (Eternal Love’s (三生三世十里桃花) ending theme song) has been looping in my playlist for a while now, and finally today I decided to listen to his other stuff that’s been collecting dust in my music folder for 4 years now. As the title track from his first album “Dove” began to play, I found myself smiling. I missed him, I really did.

I can listen to him sing for hours without being bored. His vocals are soothing, comforting, and absolutely beautiful to the ears. He really should be more popular than he is now, but unfortunately, luck just doesn’t seem to be on his side. The man is so incredibly talented though! His live performances are even better than the recorded versions on his albums. If you’ve never heard him sing before, you are missing out on one of the best singers in the world. Look below for some of my favorite Aska Yang songs/covers from over the years! You won’t regret it!
